Laura found purpose, peace, and even a second home through volunteering—and says, “If I ever need a nursing facility, this is where I want to be.”
For Laura, volunteering at St. Augustine Health Ministries is more than just giving back, it’s been a life-changing journey of healing, connection, and gratitude.
After experiencing the loss of her son in 2005, Laura was searching for purpose and peace. That search eventually led her to a senior living community where she was embraced by residents who had no idea how much they were helping her heal. “They surrounded me with love,” she said. “It brought me really good feelings, and my life started to turn around because of that.” Years later, after retiring from the Cleveland Clinic and returning to Cleveland, Laura felt called to volunteer again. The moment she heard someone speak about St. Augustine at a volunteer recruitment event, she knew — this was the place. “The minute I walked in, I felt a sense of peace,” she said. Since then, it’s become more than a volunteer site, it’s a second home.

Over the years, Laura has worn many hats: filling water pitchers, escorting residents to appointments, doing administrative work, helping with activities, shopping for residents, and even folding and delivering laundry — a task she admits she loved simply because it meant getting to chat with the residents.
But what stands out most for Laura is the way the residents themselves have impacted her. Their gratitude, resilience, and warmth have kept her grounded and continually inspired. “Volunteering here helps me stay centered,” she said. “The people I meet remind me every day to appreciate what I have and to lead with kindness.”
Whether it’s dancing with a resident during Happy Campers Week, or being remembered years later for a small gesture, Laura sees each interaction as a gift. “I don’t talk about what I give anymore, I get so much more back.”
