Chris discovered fulfillment and joy in giving back at Holy Family Hospice—and says, “I’ve never heard one negative thing about this place. Really.”
For Chris, volunteering at Holy Family Hospice has been a journey of coming full circle. She first began serving as a candy striper in her teenage years. Decades later, after her mother passed away at Holy Family, she felt called to return — this time as a volunteer.
“It’s like a holy place,” Chris shared. “People come here to grieve, and I know what they’re going through. I get it.”
Over the past five years, Chris has taken on many roles: data entry, envelope stuffing, decorating for the holidays, and now welcoming families at the front desk. Each role, no matter how small it may seem, gives her the chance to bring comfort and care.
When people first walk in, it can feel like shell shock. I just try to make them comfortable, find who they’re looking for right away, and offer a glass of water if they need it.
Chris admires the volunteers who provide communion or sit vigil with patients, and she’s grateful that Holy Family offers a variety of ways to serve. Her own strengths shine in the supportive, behind-the-scenes roles-welcoming families, helping with mailings, or pitching in wherever there’s a need.
Even in the simplest acts, she says, can make a difference. “It’s fulfilling for me, and I love the atmosphere and people here. I take it home with me— it makes me happy to do it.”
Chris believes Holy Family is a special place, one she’s proud to support. “I’ve never heard one negative thing about this place. Really.” She even encourages her brother to volunteer, especially on weekends when extra help is needed.
Her story is proof that there’s a place for everyone at Holy Family Hospice— whether it’s greeting families at the desk, helping with mailings, or decorating for special occasions.
Like Chris, you don’t have to be on the front lines with patients to make an impact. Every role at Holy Family Hospice — big or small, visible or behind the scenes — brings comfort and care to families during life’s most difficult moments.
