Every so often, we are blessed with truly selfless people. Here at SAHM, we are very fortunate to have run ins with these acts of kindness almost daily. We were delighted with a shining example of our mission which inspires to be a better employee, friend, and neighbor. Mary, one of our housekeepers, has a special knack when it comes to cooking. After getting the approval from the director of housekeeping, Mary turned in her cleaning cart for a serving spoon during her lunch break to treat a small group of residents to a homemade taste of culture with food so soulful it touched our hearts as it filled up our bellies.
Mary took initiative to make sure that our residents had a special taste of their culture, a home-cooked meal that can’t necessarily be bought because it would be without the most important ingredient- love. From buying the groceries, spending the weekend prepping, and perfecting each dish with a flip on the grill – Mary was persistent in making sure to share her talents with our residents, all of her own accord.
A spread of homemade ribs, chicken, potato salad, cornbread, and collard greens were shared as conversations of nostalgia and cooking experiences were passed around the table. Smiles were spread all around and laughs filled up the room. “It was simply beautiful, I haven’t had soul food in years and even when I was home, I didn’t cook it up like that! It was so very nice,” said resident Lavonia. To be able to gather around and share in tradition and culture is so very important and Mary saw that too, sacrificing her break time to serve our residents and take part in the meal. A huge thank you to Mary for your giving heart and skillful hands, it was an experience we all won’t soon forget!
