National Nutrition Month: Tips for Healthier Eating

Our well-being is largely impacted by what we fuel our bodies with. Healthy eating habits can boost our immune system, improve energy levels, and for some older adults, can restore feelings of youthfulness! Good nutrition feeds the brain for better cognitive and physical health. By making informed food choices, it can even help manage or prevent diseases and other physical conditions.

As we age, our bodies call for different nutritional needs like increasing foods such as omega-3- fatty acids, which can help our mind stay sharp and consuming more calcium rich foods such as dark leafy greens, fortified cereals, and yogurt. Incorporating a nutrition plan into our lives is simply about making healthier choices on a regular basis, while still enjoying a variety of delicious food.

Keep these tips in mind when considering your nutrition plan:

  • Include two to three tablespoons of healthy fats—such as extra virgin olive or coconut oil—in your diet each day.
  • Consume no more than 1,500 milligrams (mg) of sodium daily.
  • Make sure that less than 10 percent of your daily calories come from saturated fat.
  • Consume less than 300 mg of cholesterol daily.
  • Avoid sugary drinks.
