We have partnered with Lakewood City School’s Westshore Career Tech Health Careers program which allows students to do clinicals here at Saint Augustine Health Ministries and gain experience in the nursing/health related fields. “Our experience at SAHM was really valuable for the students learning to give true hands-on care!” Jacqueline Smith, Health Careers Tech Teacher.
“We began on the 2nd floor for the first 3 weeks, assisting mostly with feeding and tray delivery. This allowed students to learn the routines and get comfortable with the residents and the staff, who were very kind and helpful! The second 3 weeks we were able to give care on the 3rd floor where the acuity was much more intense and a great learning experience. The students learned about tracheostomies, ventilators, and feeding tubes. They also learned about providing good skin care, mouth care and hand massage for comfort.”
“The respiratory therapy staff, as well as nursing, were exceptional in teaching and showing students about acute care. (A special “shout out” to Nurse Maria and the STNAs on floor 3 for their help!). We also visited the staff in OT/PT to learn about the services they provide for residents, I am so glad we were able to partner for this clinical experience!” Jacqueline Smith.
