Veterans Aid and Attendance Benefit
The Department of Veterans Affairs provides an Aid and Attendance Pension to eligible wartime veterans and their surviving spouses which can help offset the expense of a senior living community, home health care or a nursing home. If the veteran qualifies, Aid & Attendance funds are provided in addition to monthly pension and Social Security benefits.
This Special Pension allows for eligible Veterans and surviving spouses who need:
- assisted living care
- regular assistance in eating, bathing, toileting, grooming
- assistance due to blindness or physical or mental incapacity
- to receive additional monetary benefits.
A Veteran may be eligible for up to $1,554 per month, while a surviving spouse is eligible for up to $998 per month. A couple may be eligible for up to $1,842 per month*. Increase each year for cost of living.
The Aid and Attendance Pension is available to veterans with honorable military service of at least 90 days, with one day during a period of war. Veterans do not have to have seen combat, been injured, or left the United States to be eligible for this valuable benefit.
The veteran or spouse must need the “aid and attendance” of another person to help him or her with some routine daily living activities, such as medication management or showering. These “activities of daily living” are what Assisted Living communities provide assistance with.

The Assisted Living Waiver Program
This program is a statewide, government-funded program that allows eligible individuals to reside in and receive services from eligible assisted living facilities such as Emerald Village Senior Living and St. Augustine Health Campus. A case manager works with the consumer and the facility to develop and maintain a care plan that fits the individual and meets each of their needs.
Residents can enter already enrolled in the program or convert to the program during their spend down period.
There is no private pay time frame required.
We work with facilities that may not be able to offer the Assisted Living Medicaid Waiver Program, but wish to find a special place for their residents with depleted funds.
You must meet all eligibility requirements including:
- You are Medicaid eligible;
- St. Augustine Health Campus Residency Criteria
*The Assisted Living Medicaid waiver is a separate benefit from the standard Medicaid benefit and is offered to individuals who qualify.
