St. Augustine Volunteer Receives Limelight Award - St. Augustine Health Ministries

Laura Champa AwardSt. Augustine Health Campus volunteer Laura Champa was one of twenty four recipients of the “Limelight” award at the Greater Cleveland Volunteers luncheon held on April 25th at the Holiday Inn in Independence.  With over 350 guests in attendance, the annual luncheon provided Greater Cleveland Volunteers the opportunity to recognize volunteers across 100+ partner agencies who demonstrate dedication, commitment, time and passion in their volunteer service.

“One of the reasons that I made the decision to semi-retire was the free time it offered to enjoy the things that bring purpose to my life, including volunteering,” Laura shared.  “After tragically losing my son 13 years ago, I discovered that helping others also helped me. Working with seniors and those in need became my passion. There are times when I wonder if the selfless act of volunteering is selfish because of the benefits I receive.  Ironic, isn’t it?”

Laura began volunteering at the St. Augustine Health Campus in June 2016 as a Friendly Visitor on the 3rd floor, greeting residents and filling their water pitchers.  Now she also assists the third floor Nursing Unit secretary with assorted clerical tasks.  Although her work hours have increased, she continues to volunteer and even finds time to assist residents during special events.

“Volunteering at St. Augustine has given me the opportunity to help others…not only residents but also at the 3rd floor nurses station. I value the friendships I have made with residents, employees and fellow volunteers and I feel appreciated, too.”

Laura works as a Medical Secretary with the Cleveland Clinic.  She resides in Lakewood with her husband, Steve.
